Why: One has to wonder what the 2014 Minnesota Gophers season would’ve looked like without tight end Maxx Williams around. Well, we don’t have to wonder anymore as he’s off to the NFL extra early, and that leaves next to nothing in the pass-catching department (based off of last season).
There were some intriguing young options in the wide receiver corp., but just three of the 12 touchdowns in the pass game came to wide receivers. Clearly there’s a need for more in the way of playmaking outside of K.J. Maye, who led all receivers with a whole 18 receptions.
Minnesota went out and attempted to get some size and bulk at wide receiver in this class, and they got it in the way of Hunter Register out of Lafayette, La.. At 6-5 and 200 pounds already, Register comes in as one of the biggest targets in the Gophers wide receiver room. He’s got a ton of raw potential, and given the need for a better passing game to help this team make the next step (beating Wisconsin and winning the division) he’s going to be the most important recruit this class has by the time they graduate (or leave early).
